SafeGraph Data for Academics

We're democratizing access to data through our academic program. How is SafeGraph data powering research? Read some samples of the hundreds of papers that use our data.

SafeGraph’s datasets include over 8 million consumer points-of-Interest (POI) in the US & Canada, which includes business listing information (like phone number, business category, open hours) and POI location info (lat/long, physical address, and building footprint).

Using an anonymized mobile GPS location data panel, we combined this with our POI data to create foot-traffic insights (visitor counts, dwell times, distances travelled, and visitor neighborhood origins) to these POI.

By signing-up for SafeGraph’s Data for Academics program, you’ll receive:

  • No-cost access to SafeGraph data for your non-commercial work.
  • Access to the SafeGraph Community to find support and community with other geospatial data enthusiasts.

If you're not an academic, but interested in accessing the SafeGraph Community you can do so here.

FAQ

Is there a limit to how much data I can download through the Data for Academics Program?

Academic researchers are given $15k of free data credits to shop.safegraph.com. If your research requires additional data credits, please fill out this form, and our team will review your request.

What datasets are free through the Data for Academics Program?

SafeGraph’s three flagship products, Places, Patterns, and Geometry, are free for academics as long as it’s used for non-commercial purposes. Neighborhood Patterns and Spend are not included in the Data for Academics Program.

How do I access the Social Distancing Metrics?

SafeGraph decided to sunset the Social Distancing Metrics product as of April 15th, 2021. We created this product in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Now that vaccinations are being administered, our other products can provide greater insights into where people are actually going as they leave their homes.

How do I access data through the SafeGraph Data Catalog?

The SafeGraph Data Catalog was deprecated in June 2021, and we no longer create new accounts for the platform. Please use shop.safegraph.com to access data. If you prefer to pull data programmatically, check out our Places API

How do I cite SafeGraph data in my academic research?

To attribute SafeGraph in your publications, please include the following:

"SafeGraph, a data company that aggregates anonymized location data from numerous applications in order to provide insights about physical places, via the SafeGraph Community. To enhance privacy, SafeGraph excludes census block group information if fewer than five devices visited an establishment in a month from a given census block group."

Please make the word “SafeGraph” link back to safegraph.com. If you need to link out to the datasets, please provide links to our documentation for whichever dataset you are referencing.

Can I make SafeGraph data publicly available so other researchers can reproduce my research?

It is against our terms of service to re-share raw SafeGraph data. It is acceptable under our terms of service to share aggregated and derived data, and to include data in chart and visual forms.

The community has a huge amount of information and assistance available for working with geolocation data. It's been very cool to see all the research and findings coming in, whether they're about COVID or anything else.

- Nick Huntington-Klein, Assistant Professor of Economics, Seattle University

The community is a great place to develop research ideas and discuss and get feedback on findings.

- Jialan Wang, Assistant Professor of Finance, University of Illinios

The ability to get feedback, find quick answers to questions, and to collaborate with like-minded people is extremely valuable.

- Dana Turjeman, PhD Candidate, University of Michigan

As human beings, we are social creatures to our core, and need interaction with others. People are typically in three places—their residence, place of employment, and a third location often related to socialization and enjoyment. SafeGraph is a powerful partner to understand human behavior through the lens of data and location intelligence.

- Shawn Spooner, Chief Scientist, Billups

SafeGraph Places helps us more accurately create location-based audiences -- the result of this is more efficient ad spend for our clients.
