Quantifying behavior change during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

We wrote a descriptive analysis of SafeGraph’s stay-at-home and Evite events during the first year of the pandemic (March 2020-March 2021). Among other things, we found that % of people who stayed completely at home during the summer of 2020 was proportional to the % who voted for Biden in the 2020 election at the county level but not at the state level. We had expected “blue” states to stay home more than “red” states, but it looks like social distancing behavior was mostly driven by an individual’s beliefs - this aligns with my observations of Trump-supporters in my very blue state of Washington. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.01.10.22268799v1
